Once in Deadhorse we changed to a smaller airplane. It carried us for 45 minutes east to the coastal village of Kaktovik. Kaktovik's air strip is gravel and is so close to sea level that it sometimes is partially covered by high tide. There is no airport, just a landing strip. Locals meet the plane in old pickups and ATVs. There are no roads to or from Kaktovik. Any vehicle that lives there arrived by boat.
